Interests: One of the things I love about Dragon Age is the moral ambiguity, in which often the choices that will help you save the world aren’t the morally correct ones. Playing with characters deciding between personal moral integrity and gaining power is a big interest of mine. Political intrigue and dealing with different factions that have historically hated each other having to work together are also fun.

History

Linked history.

For the AU, Peter was born the only son of a low ranking Ferelden noble family, the kind of landed gentry that have the bloodline connections yet long ago spent their inherited wealth and scrape by on collecting money from the farmers on their land. His parents were severely disappointed when Peter demonstrated magical ability at age six and were swift to send him off to the Circle. His parents are still alive, but Peter has limited contact with them besides the occasional birthday letter.

Unless it is a large issue, I am leaving which particular circle he was sent to open to better coordinate with the other Harry Potter cast members if/when they apply. Regardless of the specific circle, Peter was a poor student overall, only scraping by with the help of his classmates. One of the few things he actually gained some talent in was shape-shifting, though the only form he is currently able to shift to is that of a rat. His poor magical talent and overall low self-esteem/blatant hero worship of more daring mages raised concerns among the templars and senior mages. It was ultimately decided that going through the harrowing would be too dangerous as Peter would almost certainly become an abomination. On his eighteenth birthday, it was decided Peter was to be made tranquil for the safety of those around him.

Peter became aware of this piece of information, then understandably panicked and turned to his friends for help. While plans were made, in the end Peter had a rare moment of good luck (relatively speaking): the mage-templar war began in earnest before he could be made tranquil. Not accustomed to life outside of the circle, Peter was quick to flee to the rebel mages and followed them to Redcliffe. He has remained with this group as it joined the Inquisition.

Personality

First and foremost, Peter is a coward. How much this fact motivates everything he does and says cannot be understated. He is out to help number one before anyone else, though he usually hides this in the short run (really, even from himself) in pursuit of long term safety and power. Taking the fall for some childish prank is a small price to pay to then be able to bask in the approval of your more powerful mage friends, for instance. But whatever sword he may appear to fall on, it isn’t altruism motivating it. At the end of the day, the only person Peter is out to help is Peter. This means his opinions on most matters can be very easily swayed and that Peter is the perfect follower, so long as it will help keep him safe.

Unfortunately he is also a rather creative man, resulting in him being able to totally justify in his own mind all of his selfish actions and thoughts. He sees the world as an unfair place, always against him, and thus can think up all kinds of imaginative ways to justify why he has no choice but to be selfish and unfair right back. A favorite justification is that he would love to be the perfect, good person he knows he really is inside, if only the world would let him. For example,if only he had been born in Tevinter, where mages have perfect lives, then he wouldn’t have to lie and cheat to scrape by as a Ferelden mage is forced to. Really, it’s the Maker’s fault he wasn’t born into the family he should have been, where he could have been the best, most noble Magister alive instead of a little rebel mage fighting to survive. While this creativity doesn’t help fuel his raw magical talent (Peter is and always will be a mediocre at best mage), it does help him use his few talents in clever ways.

Peter’s anger at the world for being unfair, it should be noted, is more of a vague, all encompassing feeling. This is of note as it means Peter doesn’t actually hate one group of people or way of belief. He’ll never be a good fanatic for any group as he lacks this ability to direct his rage towards a particular rival group. For example, he never hated the templars in the templar-mage war, he simply went with the group most likely to keep him alive (the rebel mages) and helped them fight their enemy of choice. Similarly, within the Inquisition he doesn’t so much disagree with Corypheus as his survival chances seemed better in the group his friends were joining as well. A side effect of this is Peter is able to be relatively pleasant to just about anyone- at least until the people he is relying on to keep him safe tell him not to like that person. In that case, Peter will turn on a dime and begin cheering on his friends/allies as they fight or torment that person.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Peter has talent as a shape-shifter, and thus will expand the number of forms he can turn into as time goes on. He also has good potential for being a spy. In canon the man spent a decade as a pet rat. He has the patience needed for the long-con when it comes to that game. Unfortunately, he is terrible at loyalty. So long as he is never caught, everything would be great for the spy game. If he is discovered, however? No torture needed. He will spill the beans at the drop of a hat.

Outside of shape-shifting, Peter is a mediocre at best mage. He’ll never really fix that.

While he hasn’t spoken much to them, Peter does technically have a noble family. If really desperate, he would be able to get some small support from them.

Inventory

Mage robes and staff.

Motivation

Safety and his own comfort. Peter followed the rebel mages to Redcliffe and has remained with them since they joined the Inquisition. Considering the whole world seems under threat, sticking with the people that can protect him seem the best idea.
